Account & Data Deletion

Last updated: August 6, 2026

This page explains how to delete your AlphaMessage account and the associated server data. The app is username-based (there is no phone/email login), so we must verify that a deletion request comes from the account owner.

How to request deletion

  1. In the app: Settings → Profile → Security → Delete account. You will be asked for your password (and your two-factor code if enabled), which verifies the request comes from the account owner. If you own channels you must first transfer or delete them.
  2. By email: [email protected] with your username in the message. To confirm ownership, we may ask you to approve the request from a device where you are logged in.

What gets deleted

Timeline

In-app requests are processed IMMEDIATELY: your devices, key material, queued encrypted envelopes, media and backups are deleted the moment the request is accepted; your email address, display name, photo and two-factor data are scrubbed at the same time. Emailed requests are processed within 30 days of verification.

Data we may retain

Your username is kept for 30 days after deletion, solely as a record that the name belonged to a deleted account, and cannot be re-registered during that window. This prevents impersonation: identity here is the username, so freeing it instantly would let someone register the same name and write to your contacts as if they were you. At the end of the window this record is permanently deleted too, and the name becomes available again.

Our immutable, hash-chained administrative audit log, kept for security and integrity, permanently contains the record that a deletion took place — including the username of the account; by design this log cannot be altered or truncated afterwards. It contains no message content and records administrative actions only. We may also retain minimal records where required by applicable law.

Data on your device

The plaintext of your message history and your private keys exist only on your device. Uninstalling the app or wiping device data removes this local data from your device.
